At an early age, I was not exactly a superstar athlete. In fact, throughout grade school and most of high school, I was probably an average athlete at best. The turning point for me was when I began weight training at the age of 17 and started to notice significant changes in how I felt, looked, and performed. Since then I have been a fitness fanatic!
Today I have over 15 years of experience in fitness training and coaching. I have had the opportunity to train a wide range of individuals ranging in ages from 6 to 80, and ranging from sedentary beginners to Olympic athletes.
My graduate research experience has helped instill a deep understanding of how the body reacts to resistance and endurance training. I have been fortunate enough to put these principles to use in the form of programs that aid in the recovery from and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries.
As a trainer, there is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing a person progress, improve, and exceed their own expectations. The most important lesson I have realized is that there is no ONE magical program that works for everyone. Each person is unique with different natural abilities, goals and limitations. With this in mind, I custom design every training program specifically to meet each person’s needs and assist him/her in reaching their own health, fitness/athletic and physique goals. When I started CrossFit I immediately fell in love with the challenge it presented. The huge variation of the workouts constantly gives you the opportunity to improve yourself– not just in terms of physical fitness, but mentally as well. Another thing I love about CrossFit is the amazing community it creates, which I am very excited to be a part of here at Royal City!
I am currently in my 3rd year at the University of Guelph in the Nutritional and Nutraceutical Sciences program. Moving into the future I hope to continue my CrossFit certifications to not only become a better coach but to become a better athlete myself. After I finish school it is my goal to somehow blend my passion for both nutrition and fitness in order to help people in all aspects of health.

Madé Quay, L1 Coach
I began my CrossFit journey in 2013. I grew up very active, starting out as a competitive gymnast and then moving into competitive soccer. I liked different aspects of both sports. In gymnastics, I loved the strength, power and attention to perfecting skills. In soccer, I loved the team aspect. After high school I found it difficult to stay active as I was not used to training without a coach and also not comfortable doing anything in the gym other than running on a treadmill (which I found rather unfulfilling). I remember hearing about CrossFit and being super nervous to start because I had absolutely no experience with lifting weights. I eventually tried a class and was immediately hooked. I loved the competitive but friendly atmosphere, I loved having a coach and I loved learning and improving new movements.
The biggest thing I noticed after doing CrossFit for a few months was that I loved feeling like I was part of a “team” or community. As a coach at Royal City, it is my goal to make sure that everyone has the same feelings of being part of a strong community, regardless of where they come from or of their athletic abilities. I want every single member to feel that they have people in their corner and that they are being given the tools and support to grow in all aspects of their lives. As a coach, I strive to make every members’ day better, whether it be by the fact that they had a great conversation, saw an improvement, got a good workout in or surprised themselves by doing something they never thought they could do. I have already learned so much from the members by the way that they tackle new skills, support each other or maintain positive attitudes throughout life, and I can’t wait to see what else I can learn from the RCCF community.

Dane Horvat, L2 Coach
Starting at a young age, organized team sport and fitness has been a huge part of my life. Being involved in a variety of sports throughout my childhood has influenced the athlete and coach I am today. Early on, hockey was always my sport of choice so the opportunity to play the game at the junior and college level was a blessing. It was during the 2007 off-season when I was first introduced to Crossfit, and what a game changer! My all-around fitness heading into the following season was at an all-time high, and it showed on the ice instantly. Since then, I knew that Crossfit would always be a part of my life.
While studying Health and Physical Education at Nipissing University I grew a strong understanding of physiology and biomechanics. In addition to studying the mechanics of human body movement, I discovered a passion to influence fitness onto others. I spent my first few years as a coach split between Crossfit 705 in North Bay, and Crossfit Streets in Mississauga. During this time I have worked especially with young athletes in strength and conditioning programs. As a senior on the Varsity hockey team during my last year at Nipissing, I was hired as our team’s Fitness coach. This unique position was the beginning of my specialization in hockey off-season training.
I graduated in April 2018 from Wilfrid Laurier’s Faculty of Education program. I look forward to growing as an educator, coach, and life-long athlete here in Guelph and at Royal City Crossfit. Applying both my knowledge and experience of exercise as a Crossfit coach is a fulfilling, humbling, and continual learning process.

Danielle Stafford, Kids Coach
I was first introduced to CrossFit in 2011. And while I enjoyed it, I found it difficult to fit it into my life with three small children. I re-discovered CrossFit in April 2013 and was hooked immediately. I attacked weaknesses, built on strengths, and most importantly, set goals for myself. I quickly noticed how much more fit I felt and how much more energy I had. In my recreational hockey games, the ice felt smaller and I had a lot more to give each game. I have noticed parallels in pushing through in CrossFit with everyday obstacles and challenges in life. CrossFit has given me the courage to tackle mud races – the first being Tough Mudder in 2014 and then it’s baby sister, Mudderella in 2015. Both were challenging and loads of fun. I’m looking forward to doing more, with like-minded people who want to challenge themselves. CrossFit truly has been good for my mind, body and soul.
I have always worked with children; mainly in the interest of improving their lives. It didn’t take long for me to want to share my enthusiasm for CrossFit with children; helping them to be healthy in their day-to-day lives. After attaining my CrossFit Kids Certification, I have enjoyed watching children embrace CrossFit and challenge themselves on varying levels. I strongly believe that children involved in CrossFit will develop a lifelong love of fitness, viewing activity as fun and challenging, rather than dreading it as many adults do. I am excited to continue to develop my kids’ program, on various levels, at Royal City CrossFit.

Devin Morgan – L2 Coach
From a very young age, sports and performance have been a focal point of my day to day life. Growing up in a healthy, active family, I was taught the importance of activity and healthy eating from the get go. Throughout grade school and the earlier years of high school I participated in several organized sports. It wasn’t until the later years of high school that I discovered the importance of weights, and soon after, Crossfit.
I started Crossfit in 2010 when I was introduced to it through a friend. I immediately fell in love with two things above all else, the community aspect and the constantly varied, real life application of it. I believe that community is a severely overlooked importance in conventional gyms. However in Crossfit gyms around the world, like minded people gather every day to help push each other to their full potential. Through this phenomenon, we are not only able to enjoy our workouts more, but get more out of it physically, in less amount of time.
I am also a firm believer in the idea that real fitness is expressed outside of the gym. This is why I love the Crossfit style programming. It allows us to develop our general fitness skills and body awareness in a safe environment, through methods that are easily transferable to real life activities. Be it as simple as getting out of a chair effectively or knowing how to brace properly before picking up a small child, or a bag of groceries. It also allows us to enjoy life to the fullest, through more demanding and complex skills, such as snowboarding, skiing, rock climbing and much much more. Is it a coincidence that Crossfitters have an easier time picking up new skills? Doubtful! It’s more likely that through our style of training, unknown and unknowable, we are simultaneously training for every physical task, easy or difficult, that may ever arise in our lives.
I could talk for hours about how amazing I think this program is, and can be for anyone, but the most important thing I can say is to try it for yourself. It may change your life, and it may not, but you never know until you give it a shot!
